From Javanese ꦥꦿꦶꦪꦪꦶ (priyayi).
- from Javanese para (ꦥꦫ, “group, plural marker”) + yayi (ꦪꦪꦶ, “[royal] younger sibling”).
- borrowed from Sanskrit प्रिय (priya, “beloved”). Doublet of pria.
