Inherited from Malay رانچڠ, rancang (“peg; to plan, to prepare”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *rcaŋ (“to prick, to pierce, to insert; rack, framework”).^[1]

The sense of to plan, to prepare is reinforced by semantic loan from Javanese ꦫꦚ꧀ꦕꦁ (rancang, “to set up, to assemble; to design, to draw; to estimate”), from Old Javanese rañcaṅ, ultimately from the same Proto-Mon-Khmer reconstruction.
