From Vulgar Latin *reiectare, from Latin rēiectus (thrown back; rejected), perfect passive participle of rēiciō (I throw back; I repel; I reject), from re- (re-) + iaciō (I throw; I hurl). Cognate with Portuguese rejeitar.
