Of uncertain origin, perhaps from a Turkic language +‎ -m ‎(nominal suffix). For the root, compare Chagatai čavli ‎(young hawk; sparrow hawk), Ottoman Turkish çavlı ‎(falcon). For the -m suffix, compare alom, orom.[1]
