From Proto-Baltic *sētl-ā-, a collective formation from Proto-Indo-European *seh₁tlom, from *seh₁- (to sow) +‎ *-tlom (tool suffix).[1] Cognate with Latvian sēkla (seed, sperm); see also sė́ti (to sow).[2]
