From Vulgar Latin or Late Latin *excadēre (fall away), from Latin ex- + cadere, present active infinitive of cadō. Cognate with Catalan escaure, French échoir, Friulian scjadê, Piedmontese scade, Portuguese esquecer, Romanian scădea, Spanish escaecer.
