From Proto-Germanic *stōraz, whence also Old English stōr, Old Saxon stōri. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂-r-, Proto-Indo-European *steh₂-ro-. Compare Pashto ستر (stër, large), Lithuanian stóras, Old Church Slavonic старъ (starŭ, old), Russian ста́рый (stáryj, old).
