From Middle High German stelen, from Proto-Germanic *stelaną. Cognate with German stehlen, Dutch stelen, English steal. Locally the expected second and third-person singular forms du stils, hie stilt are still heard, which were levelled out in general Luxembourgish (due to their minimal phonetic differentiation).
