From a Vulgar Latin root *subrūpāre, from Latin rupes (cliff). Compare Aromanian surpu, surpari, old Abruzzese dialect surrupare, Sicilian sdirupari. Compare also Italian dirupare, Galician and Portuguese derrubar, Spanish derribar.
