Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طومروق (tomruk, “log”), itself from Proto-Turkic *tomuruk (“bud; log”).

1. log, the trunk of a dead tree, cleared of branches
2. chain and log fastened to a culprit's leg, a kind of wooden fetter
3. (botany) bud, a newly sprouted leaf or blossom that has not yet unfolded
