Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tomuruk (“bud; log”), a development of *tomur- (“to swell, to become round”).

1. log, any bulky piece cut from a tree, used as timber, fuel, etc.

   Synonym: كوتوك (kütük)

2. chain and log fastened to a culprit's leg, a kind of wooden fetter

   Synonym: پرانقه (pranka)

3. (figuratively) prison, a place where people are held against their will

   Synonym: حبسخانه (hapshane)

4. (botany) bud, a newly sprouted leaf or blossom that has not yet unfolded

   Synonyms: زر (zırr), طومروجاق (tomrucak)
