From Proto-Finnic *ümpärik (compare Estonian ümber, Ingrian ympäär, Karelian ümbari, Veps ümbri, Votic ümpär), equivalent to lative ympär +‎ -i, the root being a front-vowel variant of *umpi, which is borrowed from Proto-Germanic *umbi.
