Etymology edit
From Middle Dutch soge, suege, from Old Dutch *soga, from Proto-Germanic *sugō, from Proto-Indo-European *suh₂kéh₂, from *sū-. Compare Low German Söög, West Frisian sûch, English sow, Swedish sugga, Norwegian sugge. The regular form in Middle Dutch was soge with a back vowel, with fronted suege occurring only in the western dialects. The original form is still found dialectally as zoog.
