Etymology

edit

From Middle Dutch sondâer, also sonder. Equivalent to zonde +‎ -aar. It is the only word in which the long-vowel form -aar (rather than reduced -er) follows a consonant other than -l-, -n-, -r- in modern Dutch; this is surely to avoid homophony with zonder (without).
