From Proto-Hellenic *gʷə́lanos, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelh₂- (acorn); see there for cognates. Probably unrelated to Ancient Greek βᾰλᾰνεῖον (bălăneîon, bath, bathroom).
