Etymology

edit

The original meaning and etymology are uncertain. If the original meaning was "flat cake", it could be derived from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (flat, broad, plain). However, Furnée compares πέλαινα (pélaina, round cake) and concludes that it is a Pre-Greek word.
