Etymology edit

The original meaning and etymology are uncertain. If the original meaning was "flat cake", it could be derived from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (“flat, broad, plain”). However, Furnée compares πέλαινα (pélaina, “round cake”) and concludes that it is a Pre-Greek word.
