From Proto-Hellenic *peřřa, from Proto-Indo-European *pér-ih₂ ~ *pr̥-yéh₂s, from *per- (to try, risk) +‎ *-ih₂. Cognate with Old Armenian փորձ (pʿorj, attempt, try), Latin perīculum (trial, risk), Proto-Germanic *fērō (danger).
