Etymology 1 edit

Formally reflects Proto-Slavic *gǫda (funnel-like shape), akin to Serbo-Croatian гу̀дура (sharp gorge, ravine) (dialectal). Further origin uncertain.

Etymology 2 edit

Probably of onomatopoeic origin, after the call гъ́ци-гъ́ци (gǎ́ci-gǎ́ci) for evoking swine. Cognate with dialectal/colloquial Serbo-Croatian гу̏да, Slovene gúda.

Compare also Bulgarian говедо (govedo, cattle), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷew- (cattle).
