Formally reflects Proto-Slavic *gǫda (“funnel-like shape”), akin to Serbo-Croatian гу̀дура (“sharp gorge, ravine”) (dialectal). Further origin uncertain.

Probably of onomatopoeic origin, after the call гъ́ци-гъ́ци (gǎ́ci-gǎ́ci) for evoking swine. Cognate with dialectal/colloquial Serbo-Croatian гу̏да, Slovene gúda.
Compare also Bulgarian говедо (govedo, “cattle”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷew- (“cattle”).
