Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gǫstiti, from *gǫ̑stъ +‎ *-iti. By surface analysis, густи́й (hustýj) +‎ -и́ти (-ýty). Compare Russian густи́ть (gustítʹ), Polish gęścić.
