Etymology

Probably of expressive/onomatopeoic origin, related to сму́ча (smúča, “to suck”) (with s-mobile) or dialectal му́ткам (mútkam, “to prod, to jab”). Georgiev tentatively draws comparison with English smut, German Schmutz (“dirt, stain”).

Dictionaries make formal distinction between the transitive and intransitive senses.
