Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Ačaṙyan leaves the origin of the word open. According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *seǵʰ- (“to hold, possess; to overcome somebody”), with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬰- (haz-, “to seize, to acquire”) as a cognate, which he mistakenly glosses as “overcoming oneself, controlling oneself”. For this etymon see Pokorny, without the Armenian.
