Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀉𑀝𑁆𑀝 (uṭṭa), from Sanskrit उष्ट्र (úṣṭra, camel).[1] First attested in c. 1565 as Middle Hindi اوٿ (avṭ /⁠ūṭ⁠/) and later as اونٿ (avnṭ /⁠ū̃ṭ⁠/) in c. 1609.[2]
