Etymology edit
From Aramaic שְׁמָא (šəmā), from Proto-Semitic *šim-; compare Arabic اِسْم (ʔism), Hebrew שֵׁם (shém) and Akkadian 𒈬 (šumum).
The usage as an adverb is also found in Hebrew שׁוּם (shúm, “some, any”), borrowed from Aramaic שֻׁם (šum), indefinite and construct form of שְׁמָא (š'mā, “name”). Also in Turoyo ܐܷܫܡܐ (ëšmo).
