Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀘𑀼𑀁𑀩𑀤𑀺 (cuṃbadi), from Sanskrit चुम्बति (cumbati), from चुम्ब् (cumb), ultimately from Dravidian. Compare Tamil சூம்பு (cūmpu, to suck, fondle with the lips), Kumarbhag Paharia [script needed] (cumqe, to kiss).
