editBorrowed from Classical Persian زر (zar), from Middle Persian, from Parthian, from Proto-Iranian *jr̥Hanyam, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰr̥Hanyam, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰl̥h₃enyom. Doublet of हिरण्य (hiraṇya). Compare Gujarati જર (jar), Hindi ज़र (zar), Punjabi ਜ਼ਰ (zar) / زَر (zar).
