Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀽𑀭𑀬 (pūraya, “filling”), from Sanskrit पूरक (pūraka, “filling”), from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁- (“to fill”). Related to Old High German foll, Old Norse fullr (from whence Norwegian and Swedish full and Danish fuld), German voll, Dutch vol, Gothic 𐍆𐌿𐌻𐌻𐍃 (fulls), Lithuanian pilnas, Old Church Slavonic плънъ (plŭnŭ), Latin plēnus, Ancient Greek πλήρης (plḗrēs) and πλέως (pléōs), Old Irish lán, and English full.
