Cognate with Proto-Slavic *bàjati (to tell), *bajьka (fable); Ancient Greek φημί (phēmí, say), φᾰ́σῐς (phásis, utterance), Latin fātum (spoken) whence fate, Latin fābula whence fable, Latin fateor, fassus whence confess, Latin fāma (fame); English ban.
