Etymology edit

Of uncertain origin. Burrow derives the word from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (to turn, wind, round), comparing to Ancient Greek ἕλῐξ (hélix, spiral). Other theories connect the word to वल् (val, to turn round) and/or वृत् (vṛt, to turn, rotate).
