Learned borrowing from Sanskrit दारुण (dāruṇa, hard, rough (like wood)), from दारु (dāru, wood). Extensive semantic shifts created opposite meanings; "hard, rough" > "intense, severe" > "amazing, brilliant", "cruel, violent" and "hard, difficult".
