From Proto-Tai *C̬.kumᴬ (“pit”), from Middle Chinese 坎 (MC khomX, “pit, hole”). Cognate with Isan ขุม, Lao ຂຸມ (khum), Shan ၶုမ် (khǔm), Tai Dam ꪄꪴꪣ, Tai Nüa ᥑᥧᥛᥴ (xúm), Ahom 𑜁𑜤𑜪 (khuṃ), Zhuang gumz, Zuojiang Zhuang kumq.
