From Sanskrit व्याधि (vyādhi, disease; disorder; illness; plague; sorrow; etc); probably via Old Khmer bhyādha, byādhi (disease; illness; sickness).

Compare Modern Khmer ព្យាធិ (pyiəthiʼ), Burmese ဗျာဓိ (byadhi.), Northern Thai ᨻ᩠ᨿᩣᨵᩥ, ᦘᦰᦍᦱᧆ (ph!yaad).
