editEtymology
editSemi-learned borrowing from Classical Persian نماز (namāz). The beginning ล- (l-) might have been contaminated by Arabic صَلَاة (ṣalāh). Related to Thai นมัสการ (ná-mát-sà-gaan), from Sanskrit नमस्कार (namaskāra, literally “act of bowing”), from नमस् (namas, “bow”) + कार (kāra, “act; action”).
