From Pali devatā (god; deity), from Sanskrit देवता (devatā, idem); probably via Old Khmer devatā, devtā (idem). Cognate with Modern Khmer ទេវតា (teivĕəʼtaa), Lao ເທວະດາ (thē wa dā).
