From Pali devatā (“god; deity”), from Sanskrit देवता (devatā, “idem”); probably via Old Khmer devatā, devtā (“idem”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ទេវតា (teivĕəʼtaa), Lao ເທວະດາ (thē wa dā).
