From Proto-Tai *taɰꟲ (downstream; below). Compare Middle Chinese (MC tejX, “bottom; underneath”). Cognate with Thai ใต้ (dtâai), ᦺᦎᧉ (ṫay²), Shan တႂ်ႈ (tāue), Tai Nüa ᥖᥬᥲ (tàue), Ahom 𑜄𑜧 (taw) or 𑜄𑜨𑜧 (tow), Zhuang daej.
