From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b/s-wa (white; yellow; bright), which is part of a complex word family with many allofams. More distant cognates from the allofam *hwaŋ (shine, bright, yellow) include ဝင်း (wang:, bright) and Old Chinese (OC *ɡʷaːŋ, “yellow”) (STEDT).
