editFrom Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b/s-wa (“white; yellow; bright”), which is part of a complex word family with many allofams. More distant cognates from the allofam *hwaŋ (“shine, bright, yellow”) include ဝင်း (wang:, “bright”) and Old Chinese 黃 (OC *ɡʷaːŋ, “yellow”) (STEDT).
