According to Akhvlediani, borrowed from Ossetian уырытӕ (wyrytæ), the plural of уыры (wyry, rat), and reshaped by folk etymology as ვირი (viri, donkey) +‎ თხა (txa, goat). Compare ვირთაგვა (virtagva).
