By surface analysis, ნი- (ni-) +‎ კარტი (ḳarṭi); cognate with Svan ნიკრა̈ტ (niḳräṭ). For the prefix, see *ni-.

According to Klimov, from Proto-Kartvelian *ni-(s)ḳrṭ- (beak), from Proto-Kartvelian *ḳrṭ- (to pluck, peck).
