  • According to Bedoshvili, from Svan რა̈ჭუ̈̂ (räč̣ü̂, rabbit).
  • According to folk etymology, a compound of რა (ra) +‎ ჭა (č̣a), referring to the terrain of the province.
  • According to Shanidze, from the given name რატი (raṭi), the name of the first duke of Duchy of Racha.
