editFrom Old Georgian სძჱ (sʒē), from Proto-Kartvelian *lʿʒ₁e-. The ს → რ (s → r) development is regular, compare რთვა (rtva, “spinning”) ← Old Georgian სთვა (stva), სტო ~ რტო (sṭo ~ rṭo, “branch”).
