Etymology

Indirectly from Middle Persian 𐭰𐭠𐭲𐭫𐭠𐭭𐭢 (ctlng /⁠čatrang⁠/), whence also Middle Armenian ճատրակ (čatrak). Ultimately from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (cátur-aṅga, four parts [of an army: king, elephants, horses, foot soldiers]).
