Etymology

The word shares the suffix with κέλαδος (kélados), ἄραδος (árados), χρόμαδος (khrómados), φλοῖσβος (phloîsbos) and ὅμαδος (hómados). Since the word strongly recalls ῥοῖζος (rhoîzos, “rushing, whistling”) and ῥυβδέω (rhubdéō, “to slurp in”), the word is probably Pre-Greek. Moreover, the -βδ- is typical of substrate words.
