From ()かち (wakachi, dividing, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb ()かつ (wakatsu, to divide).) + () (kaki, writing, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb () (kaku, to write).). The kaki changes to gaki as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
