Etymology edit
From Old Japanese 夜船 (yopune).[1] Found in the Man'yōshū of 759 CE.[2]
Analyzable as a compound of 夜 (yo, “night”) + 船 (fune, “boat, ship”).[1][3][4][5][6]
Also encountered as yobune.[1][3][4][5][6] The fune changes to bune as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
- a boat or ship travelling at night
Derived terms edit
- 白河夜船 (shirakawa yofune): being fast asleep, dead to the world when sleeping; pretending to know everything, a know-it-all manner
