Etymology edit

Compound of 張り (hari, pasting something flat, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 張る (haru, to paste something flat)) +‎ (ko, diminutive suffix). So called for the process of pasting layers of paper to a framework to build up the model.
