Compound of 桜 (sakura, “cherry, cherry tree”) +‎ 木 (ki, “tree”).^[1]^[2]^[3] The ki changes to gi as an instance of rendaku (連濁)..

The term 桜 (sakura) on its own is ambiguous, and could be used to mean either the tree or the blossom. The addition of 木 (ki, “tree”) makes this distinction clear.
