EtymologyEdit

Compound of 統合 ‎(tōgō, comprehensive) +‎ 失調 ‎(shitchō, disharmony, imbalance, especially implying the loss of a previous harmony or balance) +‎ ‎(shō, disorder).

Coined in 2002 by the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology as a replacement for the older term 精神分裂病 ‎(seishin bunretsu byō, literally mind/intellect split/break disease), due to confusion regarding the term and the diagnosis. See 精神分裂病 for more.
