Etymology

From 花(はな) (hana) + 吐(は)き (haki, “連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 吐(は)く (haku).”) + 病(びょう) (byō). An invention of Matsuda Naoko (松田奈緒子) for her manga Hanahaki Otome (『花吐き乙女』).
