FinnishEdit

EtymologyEdit

From earlier -s-ta-i, from -s + -ta (ultimately related to the ending of the partitive singular) + -i, all noun-forming suffixes.

SuffixEdit

-sto (front vowel harmony variant -stö)

  1. Forms collective nouns from nouns indicating individual things.
kirjasto – library (from kirja, book)
laivasto – fleet (from laiva, boat)
puisto – park (from puu, tree)
yliopisto - university (from yli- + oppi, doctrine/education)

DeclensionEdit

  • The most common genitive and partitive plural forms for -sto nouns are -stojen and -stoja, which correspond to the valo declension type. Kielitoimiston sanakirja classifies many but not all three-syllable words with this suffix as the palvelu type despite the forms ending in -stoiden/-stoitten and -stoita being rare.
