- The Russian revolutions of 1917 and the Russian civil war provided the background for this struggle, which resulted in Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian nationhood as the former Russian provinces of Estland (Estonia), Livland (Livonia) and Kurland became the independent republics of Estonia (February 1918) and Latvia (November 1918) and much of the three former Russian provinces of Kaunas, Vilnius, and Suvalkai became independent Lithuania (November 1918).
