Etymology edit

Late 20th century.^[1] Alteration of Fußball with the Central Franconian suffix -es, which forms informal or diminutive nouns. Compare Pöppes from Popo (“bum, buttocks”), Tünnes from Anton (name). Perhaps also influenced by fuppe (“to hop, hobble”).
